COMELEC tells PWD voters: Avail of Accessible Polling Places in 2016

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) today called on all voters who belong to the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) sector to avail of Accessible Polling Places that will be established for the May 9, 2016 National and Local Elections.

COMELEC Spokesman James Jimenez said PWDs who wish to avail of the Accessible Polling Places may visit the Office of the Election Officer (OEO) in their city or municipality.

"PWDs need only manifest their desire to avail of such service before the Election Officer," he said.

According to Jimenez, the accessible polling place for PWDs shall be constituted by maintaining the existing precinct assignment of the PWD but the polling place shall be assigned at the ground floor of the voting center. The accessible polling place should be established in an area spacious enough to accommodate more than ten (10) PWD voters at a given time and considers the mobility requirements of PWD particularly those who are wheelchair users.

The Election Officer/s shall determine the voting centers where an accessible polling place shall be established subject to the approval of the Education and Barangay Affairs Department of the COMELEC, Jimenez said.

Senior Citizens may also avail of the Accessible Polling Places, Jimenez said. ###
