COMELEC Fixes Last Day of Filing of Petitions for Registration of Political Parties for NLE 2019

Date: 20 June 2018

The Commission on Elections has fixed the deadlines for the filing of petitions for registration of political parties and coalition of political parties for purposes of the May 13, 2019 National and Local Elections.

Pursuant to Resolution No. 10395 promulgated on June 19, 2018, the COMELEC fixed the last day on July 15, 2018 for the registration of political parties, and on August 31, 2018 for the registration of coalition of political parties.

"Political parties who failed to participate in the 2013 and 2016 polls but intend to participate in the upcoming 2019 national elections should take note of these deadlines," COMELEC Spokesperson James Jimenez said.

Under Section 8, Rule 32 of the COMELEC Rules of Procedure, the registration of any political party or coalition of political parties may be cancelled after due notice and hearing upon "failure to field official candidates in the last two preceding elections or failure of their candidates to obtain at least five (5) per centum of the votes cast in the last two preceding elections," among other grounds.

Latest data from the Clerk of the Commission show that there are currently 169 registered/accredited political parties nationwide. ###
